Mountain Faith Band, in 'America's Got Talent' semis, fails to impress judges

NEW YORK (Christian Examiner) -- The Christian bluegrass group Mountain Faith Band made it into the semifinals of "America's Got Talent," but may struggle advancing if the four judges on Tuesday night's live broadcast from Radio City Music Hall were correct.

The five-member band has put a bluegrass spin on popular songs to catch the attention of not only the judges but America, and on Tuesday covered "Can't Feel My Face" by The Weeknd.

The audience seemed to enjoy it but the judges were skeptical that the group could be one of the five that advanced out of the 10-member competition.

Howie Mandel, a judge, told them, "I thought tonight was more Branson than Radio City Music Hall. I don't think it was big enough."

Howard Stern said he agreed, adding, "The problem is when we get into the vocals, you're lacking that big moment."

Heidi Klum and Mel B. questioned the song selection, saying it didn't allow the group to showcase their vocals.

Viewers had until Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. Eastern to cast votes. Voting results will be announced tonight on NBC at 8 Eastern.

The band posted a comment after the show on Facebook, saying, "In spite of the judges' comments, we know who holds tomorrow!!! We've had great exposure and wonderful fan support!!! We are honored to represent the genre, our fans, our town of Sylva [N.C.] and let our light shine for Him here in NYC!!! We've had a wonderful experience."

Mountain Faith Band is well-known among the bluegrass circuit and sings often in churches. Its Facebook page says: "Bluegrass is our music. Christ is our passion!"

The group has three CDs and performs both Christian and mainstream music. Among its gospel songs are ones with lyrics such as "To be absent with the body is to be present with the Lord" and "I'm on the battlefield for my Lord." Many of their performances can be viewed on YouTube.
