Lunging-baby ultrasound could be Doritos Super Bowl surprise

CHICAGO (Christian Examiner) – A 30-second commercial featuring an ultrasound of a lively unborn baby is among the three finalists in Doritos' "Crash the Super Bowl" contest, an annual event in which the winning entry is aired on television during the big game.

There were 4,500 video submissions from 28 countries, and 50 videos advanced to the semifinals. Doritos then named three finalists.

Fans can vote for their favorite video at CrashTheSuperBowl.com. The winner receives $1 million and an "opportunity to collaborate with director Zack Snyder while working with Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment," according to a Doritos press release.

The commercial shows a pregnant woman receiving an ultrasound as her husband stands by her side, watching.

"And there's your beautiful baby," the technician tells the mom, who is noticeably perturbed at her husband for munching on Doritos.

"He's eating Doritos at my ultrasound," the woman tells the technician. "Do you see what I have to deal with?"

Viewers then see the ultrasound monitor, which shows the baby reaching for a Dorito. Whenever the father moves the Dorito, the baby moves toward it. In the end, the baby does get the Dorito in a humorous way that's possibly only in a commercial.

The ad was directed by Australian filmmaker and director Peter Carstairs, who said he was inspired to do the ad after watching his unborn son on a 3D ultrasound. In fact, the first images in the ad are of his son's ultrasound.

"I was interested in this collective thought that when you go into the ultrasound suite, mum is always incredibly connected to the baby and going through this life affirming moment while dad, particularly in Australia, is usually in the corner watching the footy [football game] or on his iPad -- so that was the humor we wanted to find," Carstairs told Australian media.

Doritos said in September that this year is the final year of the contest.
