A 14-year-old boy who fell into an icy lake in Missouri miraculously recovered after his mother said a prayer to the Holy Spirit.

John Smith fell at the Lake Sainte Louise and stayed extremely cold underwater for 15 minutes before he was pulled out by rescuers.

The eighth grader was brought to Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center after the accident. When the patient arrived at the hospital, Dr. Kent Sutterer, his attending physician, said Smith looked like he has a "very poor chance of survival already."

According to a report by NewsChannel 5, Sutterer said he and his team tried to resuscitate Smith for 27 minutes, but to no avail.

"He was dead for 45 minutes," Dr. Sutterer said in the report.

After the medical team can no longer revive her son, Mrs. Joyce Smith recalled praying hard and calling on the Holy Spirit to save her child.

"I don't remember what all I said. But I remember, 'Holy God, please send your Holy Spirit to save my son.'," Mrs. Smith said in a Fox News report.

She then heard the medical team saying, "We have a pulse. We have a pulse."

Smith's impressive recovery was described by his schoolmates at the Living Word Christian School as a "miracle."

The St. Louis Today reported that Smith is still confined at the hospital, where he is undergoing physical therapy, specifically to aid him with his hand movements. He may be discharded in a few weeks.

In the NewsChannel 5 report, Smith said he does not remember what happened, but was "surprised" when the doctors told him about what happened.
