Miss Honduras is missing just days before the beginning of the Miss World pageant. Maria Jose Alvarado, 19, and her 23-year-old sister, Sofia Trinidad, went missing Thursday, and now authorities are holding four people in connection with the disappearances.

Miss Honduras beat out 18 contestants to earn her title in April and was set to compete for the title of Miss World in London early this week before her disappearance. Alvarado and her sister were last seen Thursday at a spa in Santa Barbara, Honduras, where they went to celebrate her sister's boyfriend's birthday, according to the Associated Press.

"Witnesses said my daughter left the spa with three men," her mother Teresa Munoz told reporters. "I tried repeatedly all night to call their cellphones without any response."

The family reported the girls missing Saturday and police began their investigation. They have so far detained four people, with two of them being Sofia's boyfriend Plutarco Ruiz and the owner of the business where the girls were last seen.

"Initially we detained 10, but six have been released," said police spokesman Lt. Joseph Coello Monday.

Police are treating the case as a disappearance rather than a kidnapping because of the lack of evidence pointing to foul play.

The Miss World pageant involves 120 contestants from countries around the world. They are scheduled to begin the early rounds of competition this week, with the final round to come on Dec. 14. The 19-year-old Miss Honduras was a student with dreams of becoming a diplomat. She listed in her biography that she enjoyed sports like volleyball and football, as well as traditional Honduran music and dancing.
