An emotional Amanda Knox has expressed jubilation after Italy's Supreme Court acquitted her for the murder of her British roommate, Mereditch Kercher.

Following her acquittal last Friday, Knox held back tears as she addressed reporters outside her mother's home in Seattle.

Knox, who was initially facing more than 28 years in prison due to murder charges, said she has yet to fully grasp the reversal of her murder conviction.

"Right now I'm still absorbing what all of this means… What comes to mind is my gratitude for the life that's been given to me," Knox was quoted by The Washington Post as saying.

She also thanked all those who supported her throughout her long, controversial legal saga.

"I am incredibly grateful for what has happened, for the justice I've received, for the support that I've had from everyone, from my family, from my friends, to strangers, to people like you. You saved my life," she said.

The Italian Case of Cassation, Italy's highest court, reversed a guilty verdict against Knox and her ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, for Kercher's murder. The high court will release the full ruling in the coming months.

In 2009, Knox and Sollecito were first found guilty of Kercher's murder. This conviction, however, was later quashed due to the supposed contamination of forensic evidence for the crime.

In a separate statement, Knox's family also expressed "profound gratitude" to all those who supported her throughout her ordeal.

"Countless people -- from world-renowned DNA experts to former FBI agents to everyday citizens committed to justice -- have spoken about her innocence. We are thrilled with and grateful for today's decision from the Supreme Court of Italy. And we are grateful beyond measure for all that so many of you have done for her," Knox's family said.
