Syria airtstrike news, update: Doctors Without Borders hospital hit in latest airstrike
A Doctors Without Borders hospital located in Syria's Idlib Province has become the latest target of an airstrike Monday believed to be led by the Syrian government and Russia. Dr. Mego Terzian of Doctors Without Borders said, in an interview with Reuters, that the hospital has suffered seven casualties due to the airstrike.
A U.N. report confirmed that there were at least 50 civilians dead from a total of two schools and five hospitals that were hit by the airstrike. Two of these were a children and a maternity hospital backed by the UNICEF.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon expressed his disapproval and dismay over what happened through his spokesman, Farhan Haq, at a briefing in New York on Monday. He said that the airstrikes were a "blatant violation of international laws."
As quoted by BBC , the U.S. also expressed its criticism through an official statement delivered by State Department spokesman John Kirby, saying that the "Assad regime and its supporters continue these attacks, without cause and without sufficient regard for international obligation to safeguard innocent lives, flies in the face if of unanimous calls."
Moscow, on the other hand, denied the accusations that they have targeted civilians. Russian Prime Minister Dimitri Medvedev said in an interview with Time magazine that they have no plans of stopping their airstrikes until peace is regained in Syria.
Meanwhile, a separate report released by the Physicians for Human Rights, an organization that gathers information about attacks on health workers and medical facilities, said that there have been around 336 attacks on medical facilities and 697 medical workers have been killed. Most of these attacks, the group said, have reportedly been conducted by the Syrian government and its allies.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, however, remains strong in his decision and rejects any ceasefire. He said in a conference in Damascus that the government and its allies will not stop attacking the groups he thinks are terrorists.
