Maria Jose Alvarado Miss Honduras Killer: Boyfriend Plutarco Antonio Ruiz Confesses to Murders

Maria Jose Alvarado, Miss Honduras, was found dead alongside her sister Sofia Hernandez just days before she was supposed to compete in the Miss World 2014 pageant, according to reports Wednesday. Sofia's boyfriend, Plutarco Antonio Ruiz, 26, confessed to the murder and burial of the girls with an accomplice.

Maria Jose Alvarado, 19, had been reported missing Saturday after she and her 23-year-old sister disappeared last week. Witnesses had last seen them leaving a spa with Ruiz and others, so police questioned all of them and finally got a confession. Ruiz admitted that they all attended a friend's birthday party at the spa Thursday night and when he saw his girlfriend Sofia dancing with another man he shot her.

In an "act of passion" due to jealousy, he killed Ruiz and then shot and killed Alvarado when she tried to escape, according to Honduran newspaper La Prensa. The man's accomplice, Aris Valentin Maldonado, confessed to burying the girls' bodies in the mountain region of Santa Barbara by a river so the corpses would decompose faster. The men went back to try to clean up the crime scene as well, officials said.

Authorities also located two guns and the pickup that was used to drive the corpses into the northwestern region of Honduras. The bodies are being tested for DNA matches, and both been have been arrested in connection with the killings.

Julia Morley, the chairman of the Miss World Organization, told Reuters that they are "devastated by this terrible loss of two young women, who were so full of life." There will be no Miss Honduras entrant this year and they are creating a fundraiser for a children's charity of the girls' mother's choice.

Miss Honduras beat out 18 contestants to earn her title in April and was set to compete for the title of Miss World in London early this week before her untimely death.
