Doctor shot by gunman at Boston hospital, gunman dies of 'self-inflicted' wound

BOSTON — A man shot a doctor at a major Brigham and Women's Hospital Tuesday after asking for the doctor by name, according to reports. He later died of a "self-inflicted" gunshot wound, the city's Police Commissioner William Evans said, adding that the incident was over.

The shooting occurred at about 11 a.m., with the police receiving emergency calls just minutes later. The victim, a male physician, sustained "life threatening" injuries, hospital officials said. Officers recovered the gun used in the incident, but have not been able to establish a motive.

"He was targeted and that reason right now is unclear," Evans said at a news conference at the hospital. "There was something in the past that upset this guy."

"The doctor is not the only victim here," the commissioner continued. "I'm sure he [the shooter] has some loved ones."

Police have yet to identify the shooter or the victim. Hospital President Dr. Betsy Nable said that the doctor is in "serious condition," but that no further details will be provided.

The shooter was found dead in an examination room in the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center on the second floor of the hospital. The gunman was able to enter Brigham and Women's while armed because the facility does not have metal detectors, police told ABC News.

Brigham & Women's, located in downtown Boston amid a cluster of major healthcare facilities, is a teaching hospital for Harvard Medical School.
