Emmanuel Missionary to install new pastor
SAN DIMAS — Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church of San Dimas will install Gwendolyn J. White-Martin as its pastor during a special service at 3 p.m. Sept. 26.

She will succeed her late father, Dr. Shelter T. White, who founded and pastored the congregation for 51 years.

A third generation minister, White-Martin has been in the ministry for more than 25 years and worked closely with her father in shepherding the congregation for the seven years preceding his death.

White-Martin earned her bachelor’s degree in theology, with an emphasis on Christian organizational management in 2008 and was nominated Distinguished Graduate of the year at Promise Christian University in Pasadena.

In addition to her service at Emmanuel, she has worked with women’s and children’s shelters, the David and Margaret Girl’s Group Home, and All American Families United. She also mentors young adults and women and is a conference speaker.

Music festival in the desert
PALMDALE — GraceFest AV, a music and message festival serving the Antelope Valley, will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Sept. 18 at Palmdale Amphitheater. Headline acts include Big Daddy Weave, BarlowGirl and Aaron Shust.

Additional entertainment will be provided by local and bi-national artists. Other planned activities include a prayer wall and tent, a children’s area, compassion ministries, vendors and concessionaires.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the gate. Youth tickets, for teens 13 to 19, are $5. Children 12 and under will be admitted free.

Parable returns for reunion concert
SANTA ANA — Parable, one of the top ground-breaking Contemporary Christian Rock bands of the ’70s will appear in concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at Calvary Costa Mesa.

The band is doing a series of Southern California concerts this fall and will be at North Coast Calvary Chapel in San Diego on Oct. 22.

Parable recorded and toured from Los Angeles to London, and with two best-selling albums under their belt, they are reuniting the whole group for the two-hour concerts.

Band members include lead vocalist Chuck Butler, the dad of Switchfoot’s Chad Butler, as well as John and Lisa Wickham, parents of both musically gifted Phil and Evan Wickham.

Vintage vinyl and double CDs will be on sale at the concert.

Packing flags for military
MONTEBELLO — Project Prayer Flag will host a community Patriot Party from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 at Calvary Chapel Montebello.

The event will include an appearance by Aissa Wayne, daughter of the late actor John Wayne. Wayne is a successful family law attorney in Santa Monica and speaks on issues of freedom and liberty. She serves on the auxiliary board of the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica and is a member of the Congressional Business Advisory Council in Washington D.C.

The family friendly packing day, which is expected to involve hundreds of people including veterans, community groups, the USO, American Legion, seniors and Boy Scouts will partake in the project to package “Patriot Packs” for those serving in Afghanistan.

Each Patriot Pack consists of an American pocket flag and a thank you card that the volunteers will pack themselves. More than 35,000 kits will be produced. Specials guests will include veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The U.S. Marines will also be in attendance and will display some of their equipment.

There will be a free barbecue and raffle.

Women in Christian Media host dinner
COSTA MESA — West Coast Regional Connection, a professional enrichment dinner for Women in Christian Media, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at Center Club Costa Mesa.

Honnie Korngold, executive producer and host of the Travel with Spirit TV program will be the guest speaker.

Korngold has nearly 20 years experience developing highly successful travel programs for Christian ministries and the travel industry. Her half-hour television program airs on the Inspiration Network, Sky Angel and NRB Network. She also serves as the editor-in-chief of Travel with Spirit magazine.

The event is open to women in all forms of Christian mass communication.

“WCM provides a common ground for media professionals creating a synergy to explore new horizons,” said Christy Legg, vice president of iLIFE Television Network.

The cost for registration is $30 for members and $35 for guests. At-the-door admission is $40. Parking is only available through $9 valet service.

Living faith at work
IRVINE — The Faith at Work International Conference will be held 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 16 Concordia University CU Center.

Main themes to be explored at the conference are how to rethink your work life from God's perspective, be equipped to apply biblical principles to your work, learn how you are called by God to fulfill His plans for your job, network with hundreds of other Christians and view your work as a calling and service to the Lord.

Outreach to Muslims
GARDEN GROVE — The Ministry to Muslims Network will hold an outreach at the Garden Grove Arabic Festival on Sept. 24 to 26.

The outreach is part of a multi-pronged emphasis of the ministry, which also provides training sessions in how to reach Muslim adherents.

For years, volunteers from the Tustin-based group have reached out to Muslims at various Arabic festivals across the country.

Foster care conference
PASADENA — The 2010 Smedes Conference on Foster Care will be held 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 16 at Fuller Theological Seminary.

The conference is open to parents, social workers, counseling and ministry professionals and students, and will provide resources and training in issues related to foster care and adoption.

The annual Child SHARE event is sponsored in partnership with Fuller Theological Seminary and L.A. County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.

Raising funds for His Resting Place
LONG BEACH The 27th annual fundraising banquet to benefit His Nesting Place will be held 6 p.m. Sept. 30 at The Grand Long Beach Event Center.

The evening begins with appetizers, with the dinner and program set for 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Al Howard, who co-founded the ministry with his wife, Judy. Since 1983, His Nesting Place has housed more than 6,000 women and children. The nonprofit Christian ministry can accommodate up to 40 women and children at one time.

700th Habitat Restore opens in Norwalk
LOS ANGELES — Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles opened its second ReStore in early August, making it the 700th such store in the United States.

The new shop, located in Norwalk, is a resale shop for building materials. Merchandise carried by the stores is either new or gently worn. Proceeds from the store help with Habitat building projects across the country.

In addition to its benefits to Habitat, the project is also environmentally sound with more than five million pounds of materials being diverted from local landfills, just since the 2004 opening of the Gardena Restore shop.

Discipleship program for men
PASADENA — Lake Avenue Church will host a weekly course, Discipleship for Men, beginning Sept. 14th. The group will conclude on Dec. 7.

Prayer breakfast planned for October
LONG BEACH — Long Beach Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell will be the featured speaker at the Greater Long Beach Leadership Prayer Breakfast Committee, set for 7 to 9 a.m. Oct. 7 at The Grand.

The annual event is designed to lift up government and community leaders through prayer and inspiration. The emcee for the breakfast will be Blake Christian. The event will also include an award presentation and music by Anne Walsh, who performs locally and has recorded lullabies, sacred music and jazz projects with her husband, Tom Zink, a Grammy-nominated artist.

The cost for the breakfast is $35.
