PEACHTREE, Georgia -- A Georgia police chief's wife was shot in their home early on New Year's Day, according to reports. The chief told investigators that he accidentally shot her with his service weapon.

Officers responded to a shooting at about 4:17 a.m. at the home of Peachtree City Police Chief William McCollom, according to the police department's Facebook page. The police chief's wife, Margaret, was taken to Atlanta Medical Center by helicopter and is currently listed as being in critical condition.

The woman was shot twice, and the call was placed to police by the chief himself, who admitted that he shot her.

Chief McCollom has been placed on administrative leave following the shooting, Lt. Mark Brown told CNN. An investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently pending.

McCollom had been the interim police chief since July of last year and was officially named Peachtree police chief in October.
