SAN DIEGO, Calif. On Nov. 1, acclaimed worship artist Chris Tomlin, along with renowned speaker, author and founder of the Passion Conferences, Louie Giglio, bring the "How Great Is Our God" event to The Rock Church in San Diego.
"It's the perfect artistat the perfect timein the perfect venue," said the show's promoter, Jon Robberson, noting that this will be one of the first public events at the the Rock Church's new state-of-the-art auditorium.
Tomlin and Giglio traveled the country earlier this year with the "How Great Is Our God" tour and are revisiting cities they didn't get to the first time around. That includes a stop in San Diego.
The tour takes its name from the 2005 live worship album, Passion: How Great Is Our God recorded at the Passion05 Conference in Nashville, Tenn. The Passion Conferences grew out of a campus ministry Giglio was leading at Baylor University that, by the mid-'90s, was drawing more than a thousand students for a weekly Bible study. In 1997, he and a group of like-minded college leaders held an event in Austin, Texas, that drew 2,000 students for a time of worship and teaching. The next year, that number more than doubled, without any marketing or publicity. By 2000, Passion's OneDay event drew 40,000 in Memphis, and the events have been growing across the country ever since. Worship leader Chris Tomlin has been involved almost from the start.
It's difficult to tally up the number of music fans who have seen Tomlin at a Passion Conference, but there's no question that by the time his third solo album, 2004's Arriving, was released, Chris Tomlin had become a household name. The album debuted at No. 39 on Billboard's Top 200 albums chart and six months later hit No. 1 on SoundScan's Top Christian Albums chart. In 2005 he became the first artist in Radio & Records history to have three singles simultaneously in the Top 30 Adult Contemporary chart.
Tomlin's most recent album, See the Morning, debuted last year on the Billboard Top 200 at No. 15 and spawned three hit singles. The album has spent 50 weeks on Billboard's Top Christian and Gospel Albums chart, peaking at No.1.
More impressive is the number of worship songs Tomlin has penned that are sung every week in churches all across America. Christian Copyright Licensing International, which works with songwriters and artists to provide the proper licensing for churches to perform copyrighted music, currently has 20 of Tomlin's worship songs in its catalog of more than 150,000. Three of his songs are in the Top 10, with a total of 15 in the Top 250.
That's an achievement that got "Time" magazine's attention. Last year, they hailed Tomlin as "the chief American practitioner of pop-sounding 'praise and worship'" and called him "the most often-sung artist anywhere."
Tomlin has recorded five solo albums, and performed on 16 compilation albums, including the Passion projects and soundtracks for the films "Amazing Grace" and "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe." He's earned 20 Dove Award nominations and a dozen Dove Awards, two Grammy nominations and numerous industry accolades.
Robberson, founder of Celebration Concerts and Spirit West Coast-Del Mar, is excited to have the tour stop in San Diego.
"Chris is one of the most popular guys to come around in ages," he said, and with the vibrant college community in San Diego, the show is expected to sell out.
