SANTA ANA, Calif. A 30-day prayer calendar, coinciding with the August observance of the Muslim fast of Ramadan, has been made available by Open Doors USA.
The Ramadan Prayer Calendar has multiple prayer points designed to help Christians pray for persecuted Christians around the world during the 30-day religious holiday.
"Ramadan is a time when Christians are especially isolated in some Muslim-dominated countries," Carl Moeller, president and CEO of Open Doors USA, said in a statement.
"This is why it is so important for us to unite in prayer for persecuted Christians throughout the world. I urge you to use the Open Doors resources to pray for our brothers and sisters."
During August most Muslims will fast from dawn until dusk, seeking to shed their sins through acts of restraint. They believe this is a time of purification accomplished through good deeds and self-control, Open Doors officials said.
The resource information includes information on eight of the top 10 countries noted on its 2011 Watch List for persecution of Christians: Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Maldives, Yemen, Iraq and Uzbekistan.
Although the list of eight, all operated by Islamic governments, are among the worst, the problem is even more widespread with 38 of the top 50 on the watch list being Muslim-dominated societies, according to Open Doors.
Adding to the tension is the fallout from this year's "Arab Spring" reform protests in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Syria. With the reform movement came intensified incidents of Christian persecution, especially in Egypt. The observance of Ramadan, Open Doors officials said, is expected to only increase that pressure on believers.
The Ramadan observance ends just a few weeks shy of the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in America.
"It is vital that we pray for Christians and Muslims during this anniversary," Michele Miller, director of Open Doors USA Ministries, said. "Prayer has changed the hearts of millions, so it is also important to pray past the month of Ramadan."
As part of its prayer campaign, Open Doors USA will be sending out daily emails with a story from a Muslim-dominated country, prayer requests and a call to action.
