Rich Buhler, SoCal Christian radio host, has cancer

Christian Examiner staff report

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Rich Buhler, a veteran broadcaster who has been called the “Dean of Christian Talk Radio,” has an inoperable mass on his pancreas according to Assist News Service.

The tumor was detected after Buhler, host of the “Talk From the Heart” show on KBRT-AM 740 in Los Angeles, was admitted to the hospital July 28 after suffering severe stomach pains. Doctors ordered the tests because Buhler reported ongoing pain in his mid-section.

“For several months now I have had some minor abdominal pain but then it turned in severe pain and I came into the emergency ward of the hospital,” he told ANS founder Dan Wooding.

“I arrived here not realizing that when I would wake up the next day, I would become a cancer patient. The unofficial report that has been given to me … says that it looks it is malignant and also inoperable.

“Yesterday, they put a stent in my pancreas, and the doctors have referred me to an oncologist who will possibly treat the mass with radiation.”

Despite the diagnosis, Buhler said he was feeling much better than when he was admitted.

“I have felt better today than I have during the past few days when I have been out of it,” he said. “I feel very comfortable in the hands of God.”

Buhler’s radio career began as an announcer in Los Angeles when he was 17-years-old and included working over the years in Hollywood as a writer, editor and producer, including stints with Westinghouse (KFWB) and CBS (KNX). He launched his radio show, Talk from the Heart, in 1981, ushering in a new era of Christian talk radio and becoming the most popular program of its kind in the nation.

He is also the author of the best-selling books “Love, No Strings Attached” and “Pain and Pretending,” which have become popular among those who dealing with the effects of emotional injury.

Veteran Christian broadcaster, Warren Duffy, filled in for Rich Buhler on July 30 “Talk from the Heart,” show.

“All of us who are Christian broadcasters have walked into the field of talk radio through the door that Rich Buhler opened up for us when he launched his ‘Talk From The Heart’ program on KBRT decades ago. He was—and is—a true pioneer in Christian broadcasting.

“Rich and I have been friends for 25 years. We bonded back in the ’80s when he was rushed to a hospital emergency room and it was feared he had suffered a heart attack. I called KBRT on an unrelated matter just after the ambulance pulled away from the station and I think I beat everybody to his bedside. We held hands, prayed together and went on to become pals.

“Rich was my fill-in host on KKLA back in 2002 when my wife Terry passed on. Rich made the announcement on the air and he later spoke at her memorial service.”

Terry Duffy died of ovarian cancer in 2002.

“This news hits very close to home because, last year, I was diagnosed with cancer in my kidney. And wouldn’t you know it—one of my first visitors at the hospital was my buddy Rich,” Duffy said.

“A year has since passed and I am still cancer free. But now, I’m once again visiting my pal at his bedside as we walk through this ‘valley’ together.”

Rich and his wife, Dianne, have 10 children and 12 grandchildren.
