Faith-based Organizations Providing Immediate Emergency Relief


The following lists organizations that are providing relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. You can click on a name and research the organizations listed to find one that you are comfortable and familiar with.


Adventist Community Services — providing relief workers and emergency supplies to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

Catholic Charities USA — sending technical assistance teams to help the local Catholic Charities groups.

Christian Disaster Response — in cooperation with the Salvation Army and other agencies. providing disaster assistance through local churches.

Christian Reformed World Relief Committee — deploying rapid response teams to get needs quickly assessed, clean up debris, purchase building materials and repair homes, and provide funding for long-term reconstruction in those areas hardest hit. Also helping San Diego fire survivors rebuild homes in Crest and Harbison Canyon.

Compassion International

Episcopal Relief & Development — partnering with local dioceses in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to assist with local community efforts and help people whose homes were destroyed or severely damaged.

Food for the Hungry — trucking in care kits for distribution through Louisiana churches.

Heart to Heart International — with its transportation partner FedEx, providing emergency medical and other supplies.

Horizon USA Emergency Response Teams — are being deployed to work alongside Safe Harbor in respite centers set up in southern Louisiana.

Horizon USA Disaster Child Care Teams — are providing a safe environment for children around the clock as their parents obtain necessary resources and jobs to support the family.

Lutheran Disaster Response — organizing volunteers to assist in the debris removal and clean up.

Mennonite Disaster Service — beginning relief efforts in Mississippi where a Mennonite camp is located. Have helped San Diego fire survivors rebuild homes for 18 months in Julian and elsewhere.

Nazarene Compassionate Ministries and Nazarene Disaster Response — trucking in volunteers and thousands of crisis care kits.

Operation Blessing — supplying partner agencies with emergency relief supplies and collaborating with partner agencies like the Salvation Army for large-scale disaster response.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance — mobilizing volunteers to work with local presbyteries.

Project Compassion — headquartered in San Diego and beginning work for Gulf Coast relief.

Purpose Driven Ministries projectwill put pastors in the hurrican damaged regions in direct contact with a church who wants to help. A team of volunteers are looking for pastors who might qualify for this kind of urgent financial assistance and connect them to a supporting church. Rescue Task Force — directed by Wendell Cutting and Gary Becks from headquarters in San Diego, has begun shipping in 40-foot containers filled with food, water, medicines, and other supplies.

Salvation Army USA — serving residents and other first responders in the Gulf Coast states. Providing food, water, household clean-up kits with brooms, mops, buckets, and cleaning supplies, and connecting families through their emergency radio service. Also providing ongoing invaluable assistance to San Diego fire survivors.

Samaritan's Purse — dispatching their well-stocked trucks and trained teams as they did to help San Diego fire survivors in Crest and Harbison Canyon.

Somebody Cares — providing emergency supplies.

Southern Baptist Disaster Relief — sending portable kitchens, showers, and other materials as they did to provide assistance to San Diego fire survivors.

UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) — mobilizing complete disaster response materials and teams.

World Hope International — sending supplies to targeted areas where some larger organizations are not present.

World Relief — equipping churches in the effected area with resources needed to clean up and rebuild.

World Vision — shipping emergency supplies and other essential items from sites in Dallas, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, and Denver, including new, top-quality goods donated by corporations, to be distributed through local churches, faith-based organization and other partners.
