SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Mandatory homosexual sensitivity training for foster parents, the reaffirmation of the unconstitutional ruling over the Pledge of Allegiance and anti-recall violence are among the top 10 California news items of 2003, according to the annual Left Coast Hall of Shame.

The list, compiled by the Pacific Justice Institute, was first release last year as a way to shed light on actions that the institute deems anti-family and anti-religious freedom. The Sacramento-based legal defense organization specializes in the defense of religious freedom, parental rights and other civil liberties.

Last year’s list included a school district’s use of a pro-Islamic textbook, the former secretary of education’s declaration that homeschooling was illegal and a decision to bar San Francisco judges from participating in or affiliating with the Boy Scouts.

Last year’s top winner was the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals decision that rendered the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional because of the phrase “under God.” The issue remains on the top of the 2003 list after the same court refused to reverse itself this year, despite widespread criticism of the ruling.

The 2004 Hall of Shame
1. 9th Circuit reaffirms its earlier ruling that the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional for public schools.

2. New law allows illegal aliens to acquire driver’s licenses. (That law was subsequently revoked at the urging of new Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

3. All foster care parents in California must now undergo homosexual sensitivity training in order to continue caring for children.

4. 9th Circuit financially punishes Washington student because of his theology major.

5. California law no longer protects students from being interrogated about sex, family life or religion without parental consent.

6. Ventura County United Way eliminates the Boy Scouts from their funding campaign.

7. Federal statute protecting churches ruled unconstitutional by Southern California judge.

8. To show their support for homosexuality, school districts hold Day of Silence for students for an entire school day.

9. Anti-recall union members beat women and threaten a 9-year-old boy, as his dad is beaten up.

10. Christian students’ club singled out and censored to prevent any religious quotes on posters or fliers.
